Best Honey Whole Wheat Bread

August 20, 2010

One of our family members will be away from our family for a couple of years. But his being away from us means getting requests for some of his favorite recipes. One of those requests was for some raspberry honey butter and homemade bread.

So I made him a loaf of white bread, a loaf of this honey whole wheat bread, and a batch of raspberry honey butter. The kids and I have a great time packaging up his weekly treat and bringing it down to the local UPS store to send it off to him. We always include pictures, a note, and plenty of good homemade food.

Nothing is more homey than sending a loaf of fresh homemade bread and freshly whipped butter to someone. It’s the perfect gift for a new neighbor or a close friend. And with school starting and new friends and neighbors moving in, it’s the perfect welcoming gift!

  • 1 1/8 cups warm water (at least 100 degrees)
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour or white whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon dry milk powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter or shortening (I use Spectrum Organic)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Substitution for dry milk powder: If you don’t have dry milk powder, you can use 1 cup of water and 1/8 cup milk. Soy, rice or almond milk substitution is okay.

Substitution for butter or shortening: You can substitute 2 tbsp canola oil for the butter or shortening.

In a breadmaker, place ingredients according to manufacturer’s instructions. Set the breadmaker to the “whole wheat” setting, then push start.

Serve with fresh butter.

This is such a good idea. I think I’ll attempt to make the Honey Whole Wheat bread. I’ve always been scared of making whole wheat bread for some reason. Time to do it gosh dang it. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love bread. I have a version of honey whole wheat bread that make and enjoy, I’m going to compare and see what the differences are. I love your changes for specific diets, very helpful.
